Interview with Tonya Coffey
Do you write on your novel daily or do you try to have days off?
I write when I can, mostly in the mornings when my family is at school and work. If there is a holiday, I will take the day off.
If you have a “baddy” in your book, can you tell us a little about this character?Aurora. She isn’t all bad. I’d say she’s misunderstood. Yeah, she does things people don’t like and she kills people, but when you get to know who she really is, you will understand.
Is there romance in your story and if so can you tell us a little about this?
Of course there is romance but it’s not in your face gross. It’s sweet. The story is about a True Elemental who has the power to unite all the kingdoms. The True Elemental is Micha and Jessa’s baby, so of course you have to have romance for a baby to be born. They felt their connection from the start and it has built with each book.
Do you ever write sad scenes and do you feel the sadness as you write it?
Yes. I’m an emotional person, so when I sit down to write these tearjerkers; I’ll be in that mood for a very long time. It’s so bad sometimes, I can’t write anything else until I get my mind off of it, so I’ll go watch a horror movie or something so I can be scared instead.
Is your world in your book like earth or is it a fantasy world?
I based the world on the forest around my home. There are places, like the Falls, that actually exists here. Then I added elements that are more fantasy like the castles, and the waterfall that pours from the sky.
Do you prefer to write as a series or one book?
I like writing series. You don’t have to force your main character into growing into an amazing person for one book, it gradually occurs over the time of each book.
Do you think all readers should do reviews to help the writers improve?
Yes. If readers told what they liked or didn’t like about a book then the author would know what details to work on for the next. I’m constantly looking for advice, for your opinion.
When you receive reviews do you find yourself influenced to make changes?
Not necessarily. I take each review to heart. If they suggest more detail, I’ll add it. If it’s something that will help the story then I’ll consider it. If they don’t like a direction I’m going in then I’ll ignore the review. Everyone has their own opinion about the story.
