5 Second Reviews of my Favorite Books of 2017

Hey there, beautiful bookworms! Happy New Year! New Year is a time of new beginnings and I realize I haven’t been the best at updating my blog this year. However, there were so many books that I wanted to review last year so I thought, “Hey, what if I just do a really quick compilation of best reads 2017 of sorts for the new year?” I know; genius, right?

So here’s my 5 second reviews of my favorite books of 2017, in no particular order!

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas Book Review

YOU GUYS. You know those overhyped books that when you read it you end up going “enngh, yeah, it’s okay, I guess.” THIS IS NOT THAT BOOK. The Hate U Give brings to life important issues about and within the black community, from the blatant ones such police brutality against black people to casual racism. And it does it in a way that is heartwarming, hilarious, and emotional. I definitely enjoyed Starr’s character a lot; her feelings towards herself, her community, and how she manages to grow into a stronger, braver person by the end of the novel.

The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle & The Dark Prophecy

Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan Book Review

I’m grouping these together because they’re from the same series and I read them almost back to back and HNGGGHHHH GUYSSSSS. You NEED to read this. I’ve been a fan of Rick Riordan since the PJO days and he gets better and more inclusive with each series that he comes up with. In this series we have bisexual god Apollo with the most hilarious narrations. But I wouldn’t like it as much if it was just hilarious, oh no, friends. Like all of Uncle Rick’s books, he manages to seamlessly interweave the funny narrations with touching, heart-wrenching moments. It’s a talent I envy so much and that’s part of what makes these books so good. Looking forward to the next books in the Apollo series!

A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab Book Review

VE SCHWAB GIRL, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE. One of my bookstagram friends so kindly sent me a copy of ADSOM and holy craaaaap I am so glad he did because it is AMAZING! VE Schwab manages to imagine a unique and intriguing world where travel between different Londons is possible, and write up amazing characters you can’t help but feel attached to. It’s full of imagination and adventure and magic, and the world is so well-realized that I am in awe. Also I have tons of merch of this series even only after reading one book so you know how much I loved it lmao.

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Animal Farm by George Orwell Review

Ah, yes, the required reading that apparently has never been required in my Christian Catholic High School. I listened to this in audiobook and loved it. It’s classic George Orwell who says NO to communism and all that stuff, but I did like that animals were the main characters of this book and how he got his point across well despite (or because of) that. Plus now I don’t feel guilty about eating bacon.

Peter Darling by Austin Chant

Peter Darling by Austin Chant Book Review

I KEEP SCREAMING ABOUT THIS BOOK ON MY INSTAGRAM. Guys you best believe, I am un-shut-up-abble. That too is a word, shut up. It’s one of my shortest reads of this year, which is why I’m so amazed at how much heart and imagination and originality it had in those few pages. Peter’s struggle with his parents and society’s intolerance for him being trans gets so real (clearly because it’s trans Own Voices) and I might have cried several times through this entire book. It rekindled my interest in everything Peter Pan too so now I might have several Peter Pan merch oops lol. But seriously guys, if you ever try just ONE book from these five books on my list, try this one. You won’t regret it.
