The importance of writing fiction for young adults

Being a young adult is a confusing, and often, unsettling time. The world and the people are all changing around you, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and alone. When I was a teenager, one of the best ways to overcome these feelings and reground myself was by reading. A book could take me to a different place, one where my troubles and anxieties didn’t exist. For a couple of hours, I could put all of that stress aside and focus on the excitement and thrills taking place on the page. This was also a way for me to connect with the world, and more often than not, a way to help make me feel less alone. I think that is one of the most important reasons to write fiction for young adults, and is one of the major reasons I decided to. Aside from assigned reading in class, books are generally choices a person gets to make, and there are so many different genres to choose from. If someone is having a bad day at school and has been bullied, they could pick up an adventure about how the main character overcomes the villain. Or, if someone has just gotten dumped, they could lose themselves in a contemporary romance, and see that heartbreak is not only universal, it’s sort of even a rite of passage. Young adult fiction also helps shed light on important topics, putting them in interesting settings with relatable characters. With these books as well, there’s a connection that’s formed, one that hopefully expresses that no one is alone, and no obstacle is too big to beat. Reading has gotten me through some pretty tough times, and books that I’ve read during those times still have a special place in my heart. My hope is that I can provide something like that for someone else, a brief escape from reality whenever the world becomes overwhelming. Hopefully people will be able to relate to my characters, even though it takes place in outer space on a different planet, and feel like they aren’t so alone. It’s important to me that, whether they love it or hate it, my book gives them something else to focus on and helps recharge them whenever they need a break from the real world.
